International Film Festival of Kerala

The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), one of the premier film festivals of India is hosted by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. Over the years, the IFFK has earned a reputation as Asia’s best managed and potentially the world’s most people-centred film festival. The Festival is recognized as among the leading cultural events in India, featuring the best films, renowned directors, technicians and spectators from across the globe.

The festival aims at exhibiting a competition section reserved for films from Asian, African and Latin American countries and a selection of the finest of World Cinema. The Best of Malayalam Cinema is also screened in IFFK for world-wide auidience.

The first IFFK was held in Kozhikode in 1996. Incidentally, the Festival was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of cinema and as part of the event 100 films were screened. Till the Kerala state Chalachitra academy was established in1998, the festival was managed by Kerala State Film Development Corporation. The Academy was entrusted with the conduct of IFFK together with other activities for promotion of cinema. Later, the FIAPF accredited the festival and a competition section was added to the event in 1999.

The Festival is held annually in the first week of December in Trivandrum city, approximately 10000 delegates from and outside the country register to be a part. The eight-day fest conducts the screening of films among different categories like International Competition, Malayalam Cinema Today, Indian Cinema Now, World Cinema, Country Focus, Retrospectives of major filmmakers, Contemporary Focus, Homages and various curated packages. In addition to film screenings, platforms like Open Forum and workshops are also organised for the delegates to interact with film fraternities from all over the world. The annual Aravindan Memorial Lecture is a notable event of the Festival.

Golden Crow Pheasant (Suvarna Chakoram) for the Best Film and Silver Crow Pheasant (Rajata Chakoram) for Best Director, Best Debut Director, Audience Prize in the International competition section and NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Awards for the Best Asian Film and Best Malayalam film, FIPRESCI (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique) awards for the Best Film and Best Malayalam Film of a Debut Director, FFSI KR Mohanan Award for the Best Indian Debut Director are the accolades given in the festival. Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed upon a filmmaker who made substantial contributions to the art of cinema during his career.

International Documentary & Short Film Festival of Kerala

Over the years, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala has organised the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala evolved into the key platform for non-fiction filmmaking in the country, as part of its endeavour to catalyse a vibrant documentary and short film movement. Film production and scope has dramatically broadened accesibility and affordability of media technology. Today, the medium is used by image-makers from all walks of life to communicate, express, experiment and learn.The festival aims to map and reflect the exploding and imploding nature of the medium in its many facets of creativity and resistance.

The IDSFFK aims to ensure the participation of both film professionals and audiences in programmes that are designed to trigger dialogue and debates.

RIFFK

Regional International Film Festival of Kerala

The Academy conducts two regional IFFKs annually in different parts of the State. The festivals feature a selection of contemporary world cinema together with the films in key sections of the IFFK

NFFK

National Film Festival of Kerala

The annual NFFK is organised to give the viewers a glimpse of contemporary Indian cinema. The festival will have a regional language cinema as Focus.

International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK)
The International Film Festival of Kerala, one of the prominent film festivals of India is hosted by the Academy. IFFK has come to be known as Asia's best managed and probably the world’s most people-centered film festival. The Festival attracts representation from the best films, renowned directors, technicians and spectators from all across the globe. The latest edition held during December 2007 saw some 6000 delegates from both within the country and abroad attending and 129 films from 40 countries being screened.

 

International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK )

The First International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), a new initiative by the Academy was held in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala from the 23rd to 27th May 2008. The festival, a unique venture in India was organized by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy for the Dept of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala as part of its endeavour to catalyse a vibrant video film movement. The festival has emerged as a platform to map and reflect the exploding nature of the medium in its many facets of creativity and resistance.

The festival had a non- competitive international segment as well as a competitive national segment. The segments screened 178 productions both from abroad and India which includes Long Documentaries (over 40mts), Short Documentaries, Short Fiction Video Films (under 70mts), Public Interest spots, Music Videos, Animation Films and Directorial ventures of students.

National Film Festival of Kerala
Academy has put the conduct of National Film Festival in its activity table with utmost significance. These festivals conducted in different parts of the state showcase Indian films. Alike the IFFK, the National Film Festivals have transformed into a platform not only for screening good films but also propelling meaningful dialogue on cinema with face to face interactions and open forums with eminent film personalities and film lovers. The last edition held at Thalassery was a huge success.
