In the 90th anniversary year of Malayalam Cinema ,2018, the Academy has set up a research centre, the Centre for International Film Research and Archives (CIFRA) at KINFRA Park, Kazhakootam, Thiruvananthapuram.

The CIFRA is envisioned as a research centre of international standards. The centre includes an extensive library for film related research, digital archives of movies, mini theatre , conference hall, office of the Chalachitra Academy and a cafeteria.It houses a comprehensive collection of noteworthy photographs relating to Malayalam Cinema. The CIFRA has a collection of more than 12,000 films. It houses assorted memorabilia like photographs, old film publications, notices, song books, posters,and letters written by film personalities and so on. The centre can be seen as the initiation of the great task of preserving the rich history of Malayalam cinema for the future generations.

Activities

Film Preservation and Restoration

Restoration and preserving films that have been damaged over time is an initiative undertaken by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy to safeguard the cinematic legacy. The Academy has completed the restoration of Olavum Theeravum (1969), Vasthuhara (1991), Yavanika (1982), and Bhoothakkannadi (1997) so far.

Fellowship

To encourage serious academic research into Malayalam Cinema, the Academy runs a one year programme.These studies will be conducted under guidance of eminent cinema academicians and practitioners.Selected topics will be published as a book by Chalachitra Academy.

Academic Partnerships

Academy is conducting Film Appreciation Camp, Workshops and Seminar with Educational Institutions for promoting research in the field of Cinema.

Ramu Kariat 2K Theatre

Ramu Kariat 2K Theatre

Named after the legendary filmmaker Ramu Kariat, this mini theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art Christie CP2215 DLP Digital Cinema Projector and QSC 7.1 Surround, allowing quality screenings of. The theatre serves as a venue for film festivals, workshops, and community screenings, promoting appreciation for the art of cinema.

The conference hall at CIFRA is designed to host various events, including seminars, discussions, and workshops related to film research and appreciation. It serves as a platform for filmmakers, scholars, and students to engage in meaningful dialogues about the future of cinema and the importance of preserving its history.
Cafeteria

Cafeteria

The on-site cafeteria provides a space for visitors and researchers to dine,  relax and refresh while exploring the rich world of Malayalam cinema. It offers a cosy atmosphere where film enthusiasts can share insights and experiences over a meal or coffee.

Research at Chalachitra Academy
